He then drove from 4:30 to 5 AM and then changed duty status to on duty not driving as indicated by the horizontal and vertical lines on the graph. He continued to fill out the graph in this manner for the rest of the day. 

He then added up the hours for each grid line putting the figures in the total hour's column.

DRIVING 10.00
ON DUTY NOT DRIVING 3.75
TOTAL HOURS 24.00

This column has to add up to 24. If it doesn't you have probably made a mistake either in your log or your addition.

The next step is filling out the recap column at the extreme right edge of the page.

 The first entry # 18 is day number. This is not always used.

Entry # 19 is from line 3 your total driving hours. 

Entry # 20 is if you drove more hours than you should have. 

Entry # 21 is the total of hours of lines 3&4.
