How One Student Overcame Funding

Over the summer, Alex Alonso came to California Career School to obtain his Class A license and secure employment as a truck driver. Funding, however, proved to be a very difficult ordeal.

Alex needed to secure a way to pay for school– a struggle that many students across the country have always experienced. “I appreciate what the school did for me. They used their expertise to find me the best financial resources for my situation.”

What Alex was referring to was being unable to obtain training funds through key agencies like the EDD/WIA and he also did not qualify for federal student aid. On top of this, he was unable to use his VA benefits because his daughter had been utilizing it for her education.

To combat these hurdles, California Career School assisted Alex in his search of alternative funding options. By making use of the military veterans’ discount that California Career School offers and by placing him with an employer partner who offers tuition reimbursement, Alex’s tuition cost was covered 100%.

Alex completed our training program at the top of his class, obtaining both his Class A and Class B license on his first try. “I know I got the best training at California Career School because when I went to the DMV, it showed. The other school’s student looked like it was the first time in a truck.”

Now that Alex has completed all 300 hours of his training, he will begin his truck driving career with Werner Enterprises. “I am looking forward to getting started. This is something I have always wanted to do. After my recent lay off and just celebrating my 47th birthday, I felt this was the perfect time to fulfill a lifetime goal.”

Kicking Off CCS Job Fair

Two buses full of students, alumni, and Marines came from our Twentynine Palms and Oceanside training sites to sit in on three major carriers as they presented their companies and what trucking would be like with them.

US Marine Ernest Phillips remarked on the first company’s presentation, “He pulled me in– the way he displayed what he had to offer… [They] provided enough material for us to take home.” The overall feeling he described was one of confidence.

Students can expect to look forward to more job fairs at California Career School in the future! Students like Obed Castaneda provided us valuable feedback on their expectations– things like hoping to see more companies and different offerings like local jobs next time around. He said, “No complains, definitely pretty good.”

At mini job fairs like these, students have the opportunity to ask detailed questions and in turn receive detailed answers. The companies that attended went over the following items:

  • Pay scales
  • Career paths and how to reach your end goal
  • Benefits packages
  • Company equipment
  • Training process & period
  • Differentiation from other companies

Big thanks to our students and our instructors for making this happen! Also a thank you to Ryan from Central Refrigerated, Valerie from GTI, and Stan from CRST! We hope to do this again!

CRST: Their Experience with CCS & Their Job Openings

“CRST is experiencing an exciting period of growth at this time in our company, and needs to add approximately 600 drivers to our fleet in the next twelve months. To meet this need, we hire both experienced drivers and recent truck school graduates. When we hire graduates from truck schools, it is extremely important that we hire from the best schools in the country. California Career School is one of those schools.

In the times that I have visited this school, I have been quite impressed by the quality, caliber and professionalism of the staff and the facilities. We have hired many of their graduates and they have turned out to be excellent drivers for our company. In fact, in my 15 years of recruiting experience I would say that this has consistently been one of the top two truck schools in all of southern California, and that is quite an accomplishment.

After Driving Over the Road

“Hello, my name is Joe Droegemeier. I am retired from the US Army with 20 years of service and like most vets, I didn’t really know what I wanted to get into. I had little over a year to go when I received a call from Geoff Berner (Counselor California Career School) presenting me with the idea of driving a truck once I retired from the Army.

I began training with the California Career School while I was still on active duty with the Army. California Career School allowed me to do my training on weekends (military personnel only) up until the time I was ready to test at the DMV. I was also able to use tuition assistance through the military and the company i drove for paid back my portion of what was left after tuition assistance.

After driving over the road, I now drive local and see my family every night.

Joe Droegemeier”

Joshua Beall graduated California Career School in Yuma, AZ back in the beginning of October 2010 and went to work for C. R. England and has chosen to stay out on the road to get more experience.

In February 2011, Joshua leased his first truck, a 2010 Freightliner, and became an Owner Operator.

Congratulations Joshua!

CCS Athlete and Hunter

Walter David Hinds, athlete and hunter, came to California Career School back in October last year. He has a son in Afghanistan and is a graduate of various weapons and training schools.

We asked him, why choose a vocational school? “Honestly,” David expressed, “I needed the permits.” He talked about his weapons training, being an edge weapon instructor, avidly participating in jujitsu and all kinds of other activities. Yet, application after application, employers would press him, “Where’s your permit for pepperspray?” or “Where’s your permit for baton training?” Some employers told him that his concealed carry weapons permit was not valid for the job—that he needed a regular firearms carry permit. That’s how David Hinds stopped by our front door here at California Career School. He earned his firearms permit, pepperspray training permit, baton permit, first aid/CPR permit, and finally his guard card.

“Right now, I’m headed to the gym,” he joked. “Right now, I’m focusing on one job,” David referred to Social Security or any Veteran’s building. “I’ll apply to other different places. I’m a protective agent,” he explained, “that’s what I enjoy.”

So we went on to talk about firearms. He described to me a situation some time ago when he was approached by some individuals out in Moreno Valley and was shot twice in the chest during a robbery. “There’s dangers, so you have to be careful. Good things happen from [guns]—bad things happen from [guns].” When the robbery occurred, he thought, “I didn’t really think anything would ever happen to me.” David expressed that, no matter how prepared you feel to be, there are always threats.

Fast forward to today, after his completion of the Homeland Security and Investigations Course. He talked about the importance of keeping face as a security officer and to use the mind before resorting to force. He said, “Always got to keep sharp. You have to balance it out. You don’t want to be hurting someone for no reason.” Over the course of training, Roland, our course instructor, helped David refine a number of things, one being trigger reset while handling firearms. Another more personal type of focus was David’s left eye dominance, which he had previously been unaware of. Adjustments in firearm grip and technique needed to be made because of this.

“I knew where my strengths and weaknesses [were],” he described. “Roland helped turn my weaknesses into strengths… There’s always room for improvement. I definitely feel improved.”
